State Competitive Events

 

 

CHILD CARE EVENTS

01 - Art Activity for Children

Select and demonstrate appropriate "process-oriented" art activity to be used with the children.

 

02 - Bulletin Board

Develop and demonstrate a bulletin board, which will encourage children to learn.

 

          Each student will select one of the following categories in which to compete.

                    01A - Discussion Board:  The bulletin board is used to generate discussion on a particular topic.  It

                    is not intended that the children or the teacher would manipulate parts.

                    01B - Interactive Board:  The bulletin board will generate activity and the involvement of the child

                    (e.g. matching).

 

03 - Child Care Research Paper

To demonstrate research, organization and presentation of a written paper in the child care field.

  

04 - Children’s Snacks

To create a nutritious snack which young children could prepare with supervision.

 

05 - Creativity Unlimited

Develop and demonstrate a toy or table game, which could be used as a teaching tool for a child or a group of children by using a variety of materials that are available.

 

06 - Flannel Board Storytelling

Demonstrate techniques and materials for using a flannel board to tell stories to children.

 

07 - Music Activities

Demonstrate techniques in selecting and teaching musical activities to children.

 

08 - Reading a Story

Demonstrate techniques in selecting and reading stories that stimulate creativity and deepen an understanding of multicultural and gender-fair human relationships.

 

09 - Storytelling:  Draw and Tell, Cut and Tell, Dramatization, Puppetry and Others

Demonstrate techniques in telling stories with animation and expression and encourage participation of children.

  

10 - 3N’s:  Numbers, Nature and Nutrition

Develop and demonstrate materials and/or ideas that encourage the questioning method and thus help the child develop an inquiring mind.

 

11 - Toys and Table Games

Develop and demonstrate a toy or table game that will contribute to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social development of children.

 

 

FASHION, APPAREL AND TEXTILE EVENTS

 

17 - Display:  Fashion, Interior, Cosmetics, Miscellaneous

Demonstrate competency in display by presenting a completed display during the event.

 

18 - Recycle and Redesign - Demonstrate the ability to select a used fashion or home apparel item and recycle into a new product.

 

19 - The Total Look in Cosmetology

Demonstrate and apply techniques and principles of cosmetology.

 

 

FOOD SERVICE AND FOOD PRODUCTION EVENTS

  

20 - Cake Decorating

Demonstrate the planning, decorating and displaying of a cake for a specific occasion.

 

Participants may decorate a cake for one of the following specific occasions: birthday, wedding/anniversary, a holiday, and any other special occasion

 

There will be three categories (types of cakes) for the event:

                    20A - decorating a flat surface 1/4 sheet cake using only frosting and color. 

                        20B - decorating a cake consisting of two 8” round layers in a foil pan using only frosting and
                             color. 

 

21 - Creative Garnish Event

Demonstrate the ability to creatively use a variety of food ingredients and materials to prepare and display a garnish that would appeal to a customer and employer.

 

22 - Food Service Mathematics

Demonstrate the use and understanding of food service mathematics involved in accurately performing the operation of a food service business.

 

23 - Meal Service: Server

 Demonstrate food service skills by performing the routine duties of a server and bus person under simulated restaurant conditions.

 

 This event is a 5 phase practical demonstration of food service skills.

            a.         Phase one      Table setting:  Two minutes will be allowed for the completion setting
                                            a table for two.

            b.         Phase two      Order taking: Greet customer, pour water, and take his/her order

            c.         Phase three    Serving: Serve the food order and present the completed guest check to
                                            customer.

            d.         Phase four      People Skills: Oral examination of two questions about food service customer
                                            standards and food service skills.

            e.         Phase five      Bussing: Three minutes will be allowed for the completion of bussing the table.

 

24 - Salad Preparation

Demonstrate ability to creatively use a variety of food ingredients and materials to prepare a one-course salad luncheon.

 

25 - Sandwich Preparation

Demonstrate and recognize the procedures for making sandwiches and display of the sandwich plate in food production by preparing a sandwich characterizing standards and quality that would satisfy a customer and employer.

 

               Participant will choose to prepare ONE of the following types of sandwiches:

                            25A - CLOSED SANDWICH (shall consist of 2 slices of bread plus filling)

                            25B - COMBINATION SANDWICH (shall consist of 3 slices of bread plus filling)

                            25C -SPECIALTY SANDWICH (shall include specialty bread such as hoagie buns, flour tortilla,

                       croissants, pita or pocket bread with filling).

 

 

HEALTH AND HOUSING/HOUSEKEEPING EVENTS

 

28 - Floral Design

Demonstrate the arrangement of a floral centerpiece using good design principles and proper preparation techniques and mathematical skills by pricing out the completed arrangement.

 

29 - Health Research Paper

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to complete a health research paper that relates to an occupational interest area.

 

30- Medical Abbreviations

Demonstrate individual proficiency in the use and understanding of medical abbreviations.

 

31 - Nursing Assistant

Demonstrate competency in medical and communication skills needed by a certified nursing assistant.

 

GENERAL EVENTS

 

34 - Bulletin Board (General)

Develop a bulletin board related to Family and Consumer Science or Service Occupations.

 

35 - Career Demonstration

Demonstrate skills and knowledge in a career area using the demonstration method.

 

36 - Career Investigations

Demonstrate ability to perform self-assessments, research and explore a career, set career goals, create a plan for achieving goals and describe the relationship of Family and Consumer Sciences/Service Occupations coursework to the selected career.

 

37 - General Research Paper

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to complete a research paper that relates to an occupational interest area.

 

38 - Job Manual

Demonstrate the preparation of a job manual in the participant’s area of employment.

 

 

LEADERSHIP ENHANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

 

40 - Consumer Quiz Bowl

Demonstrate individual proficiency in consumerism.

 

41 - Creed, Mission and Purpose

Demonstrate individual proficiency in the understanding of our Creed, Mission, and Purposes.

 

42 - Job Interview

Demonstrate individual proficiency in the understanding proper interview techniques and standards.

 

43 - Parliamentary Procedure

Demonstrate individual proficiency in the use and understanding of Parliamentary Procedure.

 

44 - FCCLA Planning Process and Community Service

Demonstrate individual proficiency in the use and understanding of the FCCLA Planning Process and Community Service national program.

 

45 - Step One - General FCCLA-HERO Facts

Demonstrate individual proficiency in the use and understanding of Minnesota FCCLA-HERO and the national FCCLA organization.
