The 2008 Minnesota FCCLA-HERO State Leadership Conference is coming quickly. The conference will be held on April 21 and 22 at the Ramada Hotel and Grand Rios Indoor Water Park in Brooklyn Park. This is the second year the Minnesota FCCLA-HERO State Leadership Conference will be at the Grand Rios. The theme for 2008 is “We’re all in this together.”
At the formal/semi-formal banquet on Monday night we will be having “R5” perform. R5 Productions has developed one of the most powerful and effective youth presentations in the country. The goal is to equip, empower and encourage students on a personal level to bring them to a place where they can reconnect, rethink and rediscover. R5 was a featured session at the 2007 National FCCLA Leadership Meeting. Monday night we will also be recognizing chapters who were involved in any national programs this year, the state and national community service project and the cash for trash program. The HERO Connection scholarship applicants will be recognized and the recipient will be announced. The Total Look in Cosmetology models will show off all their hard work in hopes of winning the people’s choice award. Following the banquet, delegates will be able to enjoy the water park until 9:45 p.m. at which time Minnesota FCCLA-HERO will be holding a Relay for Life HERO style in the water park. We want to raise more money than last year for cancer research.
In addition to the 57 State and National competitive events, participants will have the opportunity to attend workshops on various youth issues. Potential employers will be accepting applications and colleges will be informing students about the opportunities they have to offer Tuesday morning at the Career/Job Fair. There will be many door prizes given away at the end of the Relay for Life event and at the awards luncheon for those who have attended sessions and the job/career fair.
At Tuesdays luncheon awards will be handed out. All participants will be recognized with a gold, silver, bronzer, honorable mention, or participation award. The delegates who will receive Johnson and Wales scholarships will also be awarded at this time. The first place finishers in National STAR events, (Students Taking Action with Recognition) will have the opportunity to go to Orlando, Florida in July to compete at the National Leadership Meeting.
The 2008 State Leadership Conference is approaching very quickly. We hope to see all of you there. Our mission is to gain a greater understanding of team work, diversity, communication and the challenges we face in our daily life. Remember “We’re all in this together!”
~ Corissa Duffy, Vice President of Public Relations
Minnesota FCCLA - HERO held its first State Leadership Conference in the spring of 1971 under the name Minnesota Association of H.E.A.R.T. (Home Economics and Related Training.) The focus of this student organization is to provide leadership opportunities for students in service occupations programs. In 1981 H.E.A.R.T. changed its name to HERO and in 2001 to FCCLA – HERO to align with the national name change to FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), which was formerly FHA/HERO. Being part of FCCLA provides national leadership opportunities for occupational students.
This year all displays, posters and exhibits will be on display.
- Monday night before the banquet, there will be tables outside the Ballroom where you will be able to see the wonderful work of members that were judged on Monday.
- Tuesday prior to the luncheon, you will be able to see the Tuesday exhibits outside the Ballroom.
