The 2006-07 state Executive Council wants to thank you for Making A Difference Everywhere at Fall Delegate Assembly on November 16th. In addition to the election of the new state executive council, delegates heard a dynamic keynote on the “THE LABOR BEHIND THE LABEL” by Pamela Zimba.
Have you ever wondered who makes the clothes you wear? The soccer balls you kick and the athletic shoes you wear? Have you ever thought about who picks the beans for the coffee you drink or the chocolate you enjoy? Who harvests the fruits and vegetables you eat? Have you ever marveled at the low cost of many items, “that great bargain” you found?
Too often, the answer lies in the cheap labor force, children, nearly 250 million strong world-wide. Children who work in unsafe conditions. Children who are “sold” into slavery by impoverished families. Children who have had their childhood and their dreams stolen. Children who have no voice.
Delegates learned that as consumers, we can speak for these children with our purchasing power. We can take action to end this global tragedy. Labels mask the realities of this issue but also provide the means for change. Your informed shopping choices can allow children to reclaim a childhood stolen by poverty, can give them a chance to learn rather than labor, and can erase despair from their faces and replace it with hope.
You can Make A Difference Everywhere with your choices.
